Reid Davenport wins at Independent Spirit Awards

Stanford MFA Documentary Film alum picks up Truer Than Fiction Award for his debut feature "I Didn't See You There"
In a reflection of an unmarked storefront is a grayish silhouette of a man using an electric wheelchair. Behind the man is a spectacular red and yellow circus tent. Underneath the photo is a magenta banner with three yellow semicircles and an orange circle, and the words “Sundance Film Festival 2022” in black.

Reid Davenport (MFA '16), whose debut feature film I Didn’t See You There won the Sundance Film Festival's U.S. Documentary Directing Award in 2022, has just received the Truer Than Fiction Award at the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards

The Truer Than Fiction Award is presented to an emerging director of non-fiction features who has not yet received significant attention.

In Davenport‘s I Didn't See You There, a disabled filmmaker, spurred by the spectacle of a circus tent that goes up outside his Oakland apartment, launches into an unflinching meditation on freakdom, (in)visibility, and the pursuit of individual agency.
